“Rose of Baghdad”
“Rose of Baghdad”
France, Paris
Maurice Guiraud-Rivière
Bronze, silver; casting, silvering
Hight 81 cm
The sculpture depicts a nude dancer with her arms spread wide. The position of the arms, slight turn of the head and crossed legs give the figure an elegant theatrical character. The smooth silvery surface emphasizes the flowing contours of the body and reflects light in broad highlights. Stylized flowers and leaves at her feet connect the figure with the multi-tiered stone base. “Rose of Baghdad” reflects the Art Deco interest in dance imagery and Oriental motifs, which became widespread in European culture of the 1920s.
