Engraved on the bottom of the box is the inscription: “This Gold Box was presented on the 21st Septr 1761 with the Freedom of the Borough of Scarborough to Sir John Major Bart then one of the Representatives in Parliament for that Borough, in Testimony of his Diligence in promoting & protecting the Trade & Commerce of that Port”. The inscription is enclosed in a cartouche stylized as a leather strap with the motto “Deus Major Columna” (“God is the greatest support”). Included in the set is the freedom scroll executed on parchment.
The gold casket features a rectangular body with rounded vertical edges and a hinged lid. Under the lid, there is a compartment with a mirror-polished surface. The lid, the base, and the side facets are decorated with engraved compositions.
