Metallic gilded rectangular case in the form of a casket with profiled sides. In the center of the upper panel is an oval opening, bordered by a smooth frame and closed by a hinged lid in the chased frame. The inner side of the lid is mirror-polished. A painted enamel composition based on the painting "The Swing" by the 18th-century French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard is placed across the entire upper side, including the lid, depicting a young woman in a fluffy dress and a shepherdess hat sitting on a swing. The swing is being pushed by a gentleman standing on the right, while a young man hides in the bushes on the left. The scene is bordered by a chased golden ornament with leaves and volutes against a background of black enamel. Behind the panel, a clock is installed at a slight incline to the vertical, housed in a rectangular case with profiled side panels decorated with chased ornamentation.
When the mechanism is turned
on, the oval lid opens automatically, and a miniature bird in bright plumage
appears on a field with an openwork gilded grille; the bird spins in place,
flaps its wings, and opens and closes its beak, while the sound mechanism
replicates clear bird chirping. At the end of the performance, the bird
retracts into a recess in the openwork gilded grille, and the lid closes.
