Manufacturer's mark and Parisian date mark “P87”, 1787–1788 on the inner side of the lid. On the rim, discharge marks (poinçon de décharge) of the Parisian tax collectors Henry Clavel and Jean François Kalendrin (1782–1789). Engraved on the rim is the master's surname “Vachette á Paris”.
The bonbonniere features a flat, circular gold box with a detachable top lid. The upper surface of the lid is decorated with a cameo depicting the ancient Greek goddess of the dawn, Aurora, riding in a chariot drawn by a pair of horses. The cameo is executed in the glyptics technique out of brown glass on a milky ground. Below the image, the artist's signature is placed: “S.S. De Gault in 1788”. The cameo is surrounded by a thin engraved gold chain, a smooth ring, a border of translucent blue enamel, and rings of small chased gold "pearls" on a polished field. The same framing is present on the bottom and the side of the box. In the middle of the lower surface, against a background of blue translucent enamel, there is an image of a circular shield with acanthus leaves twisted around a central floral rosette. The shield is surrounded by six identical rosettes with blue enamel. Similar rosettes decorate the side surface of the bonbonniere. The inner surfaces of the box and the lid are mirror-polished.
