The roll features program perforation — coded record of control commands sequence transmitted to musical instrument to reproduce melody of Impromptus on a Theme by Clara Wieck (Variationen F-moll über ein Thema von Clara Wieck, Op. 5), written by German composer and pianist Robert Schumann (08.06.1810–29.07.1856). This is piano cycle consisting of theme and ten variations on theme by Clara Wieck (13.09.1819–20.05.1896) — pianist, composer, and teacher, daughter of famous pianist and teacher Friedrich Wieck, who was Schumann's teacher, wife of Robert Schumann, and one of most prominent representatives of Romantic era. Around 1831, she wrote piece Romance variée (Op. 3), and Schumann, who was then actively studying Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, was inspired by this theme to write cycle. First sketches of cycle pieces appeared as early as 1830, and in 1833 Schumann completed first edition. Later, in 1850, second edition was published. Theme is written in key of F minor (f-moll). Schumann masterfully develops it, creating rich texture of contrasting episodes.Melody on music roll is coded from performance by Russian pianist Anna Nikolayevna Yesipova (Annette Essipoff, 12.02.1851–18.08.1914).
The roll is housed in cardboard case shaped as rectangular parallelepiped, consisting of base with wooden insert and hinged lid covered with dark brown binding material. Labels similar to one on roll are affixed to ends of lid.
