The automaton is mounted on rectangular wooden base with rounded edges, covered in brown embossed velvet, and decorated with goldish cord along the edges and braid around the perimeter. Automaton in the form of a smoker figure, holding a bone cigarette holder in his right hand and a lace handkerchief in his left stands on the base.
On the base rear side, there is a built-in key with a pierced bow featuring the letters "RD" and a pull activation knob. Housed inside the base is a cam mechanism controlling the automaton, combined with musical movement. The spring motor is wound by the key.
When the automaton is activated, the smoker figure moves: the head turns from side to side and moves up and down, while the left hand raises and lowers the handkerchief. Then, the right hand brings the cigarette holder to the mouth, from which the smoker takes a long puff, and then exhales smoke from the mouth. The action is repeated. All movements are accompanied by the sounds of a musical movement with pinned cylinder and comb. The operation of the pneumatic mechanism that releases smoke has not been verified. A paper label with the handwritten title of the melody, placed within an ornate border, is glued to the bottom of the base.
