Snuffbox depicting flowers
Germany, Hanau
Circa 1775
Multi-colored gold, enamel; enamel over guilloché, painting, chasing
2.9 x 8.6 x 6.0 cm, 192 g
Maker's mark ”CF” (incuse): crown over a heart; thrice repeated, indistinctly struck mark depicting a crescent with a dot and radiating rays (spikes) at the top.
The snuffbox features an oval-shaped gold body decorated with golden borders on a matted ground, with a detachable lid. The lid, the bottom panel of the base, and the side surface are decorated with panels featuring a guilloché pattern in the form of horizontal waves and covered with translucent gray enamel. The floral pattern, moiré due to the guilloché: branches with red roses, blue pansies, and green leaves within a polished gold border, imitates the texture of chintz fabric or chiné à la branche silk material. Under the lid, there is a tobacco compartment with marks on the mirror-polished surface of the base and the lid. The edges of the lid, the bottom panel, and the side surface are decorated with a band depicting acanthus leaves of green gold on a matted ground along the lower edge; the panels of the side surface within profiled frames are separated by images of classical urns of three-colored gold.
