Set in the lid is a polychrome enamel depiction of the biblical scene "The return of the prodigal son": The repentant young man returns to his father, joyfully greeted by a dog that has placed its front paws on his waist. The image is enclosed in a wide gold frame decorated with cloisonné enamel in the form of plant scrolls in black enamel against matted (pounced) background, set between two rows of split pearls.

The side panels feature inserts with wavy gold ornament against field of black opaque enamel, enclosed within white enamel frame. The bottom panel features a guilloché field bordered by a band of light blue enamel with an ornament of alternating gold leafy branches against the field of black enamel and gold leaves with scrolls. The corner panels present an ornament in the form of a branch with gold leaves against light blue enamel field.
