An automaton designed as a figure of a young Black musician, sitting barefoot on a tall wooden stool. The seat is upholstered in brown velvet, decorated with braided trim along the bottom edge and tassels on the corners. The youth has brown glass eyes, movable eyelids with eyelashes, and dark chestnut hair; his mouth is half-open. He wears a six-panel cap with a small visor on his head. He is dressed in cropped trousers made of striped fabric, a jacket of shiny brown material, and white-and-pink striped shirt with buttons. In his left hand, the youth holds the neck of a three-string banjo.

The musical mechanism, featuring a comb, a program cylinder for two melodies, and a spring-driven motor, is housed beneath the seat of the stool. A winding key and an on/off switch button are located on the rear side.
