Girl with two hand puppets

    Girl with two hand puppets

    Late 19th century

    Bailly Charles Eloy

Bronze, ivory, marble; casting, carving, patinating

    Signature “C. Bailly”

At the center of the composition is a girl with two bibabo puppets (glove puppets worn on the hand and moved with the fingers). This detail turns the statuette into a small scene of children's play. Bronze conveys the volume of the clothing and accessories, while carved ivory distinguishes the exposed parts of the body with a lighter, smoother surface. The contrast of materials remains restrained and does not distract from the subject. The work is signed by Charles Eloy Bailly, a master of 19th-century French cabinet sculpture.
