The gold snuffbox features a rectangular body with a hinged lid . On the protruding lid with a profiled edge, there is a relief chased image of a landscape with a nude youth mourning the death of a doe lying under a tree, surrounded by relief scrolls in the rocaille style and foliate branches on a matted ground [инфо]. Under the lid, there is a tobacco compartment with marks on a mirror-polished surface . On the side surface of the base, there are chased images of scenes with animals surrounded by architectural elements and scrolls in the rocaille style .
The plot probably refers to the myth of Cyparissus — a youth, favorite of Apollo, who accidentally killed his pet stag and wept so bitterly that he was turned into a cypress tree, a symbol of mourning .
