Oval-shaped gold snuffbox fitted with a hinged lid. Mounted into the top of the lid is an oval painted miniature featuring a half-length portrait of the Duke of Penthièvre. The historical figure is depicted in a three-quarter view turned to the right, wearing a powdered wig, a doublet, and a lace cravat-jabot. The portrait insert is enclosed within an elegant chased frame in the form of a floral garland and is set against a partially engine-turned field; the entire perimeter of the lid's rim is highlighted by a border of leaves and buds.
The sides of the body are decorated with four rectangular reserves featuring regular engine-turned patterns. The pilasters separating the inserts are filled with raised compositions in the form of flower vases, while the lower third of the body is styled with a band of stylized rosettes and leaves. The base features a large oval medallion with geometric guilloché, enclosed within an ornamental border of leaves and buds.
